Si the Town Crier
JM: That was Si, and he had this impediment. He was the town crier, whenever he started to ‘Oyez’ people used to stand back because he used to spit it out at you.
BH: Tell us the story about how the men said he could ring the bell.
YC: Well he (Si) was down on the Town Platt and the men said ‘Si, if you can ring the bell without using your hands, we’ll give you thruppence. So he tied the bell round the back of him and kicked the bell with both feet and rang the bell and so he had his thruppence.’
