everybody has a story to tell about their life

Leaving School

Joan Murray and Yvonne Cleave, 2013

YC: We both left school at fourteen and both went into business.

JM: I worked for Mrs Keats down the chip shop.

YC: Yes but you went into Chapman’s didn’t you?

JM: Chapman’s was a long time after. First off when I left school I went up to help Mother Gifford.

YC: Oh did you?

JM: I worked there a long time. And then I went to work for Chapman’s.

YC: I went in Wadebridge and learnt the drapery trade and window dressing. And I only had one job ever. I stayed there until I married. Then I went back part-time.
