everybody has a story to tell about their life

Living on fish

Joan Murray and Yvonne Cleave, 2013

YC: I’m from a fishing family and my father was fishing for years and so more or less we lived on a lot of fish.

JM: I think that’s why I don’t like fish very much today!

YC: We had the cheaper sort in Higher Barn, we used to boil the crabs. Lobster was 3 shilling (15p) I remember. I used to think that was big money…good money.

JM: We never had lobsters or the waiters but we could have spider crabs.

YC: We always used to have the cheaper end you see cos visitors started coming and so they would sell the waiters, the crabs, to the visitors.
