everybody has a story to tell about their life

Mrs Hicks, Port Isaac School Teacher

Peter Rowe, 2013

Peter: Mrs Hicks was the teacher at the school (Port Isaac School) she was a very good teacher, very strict teacher. She was Jack Hicks the butcher’s first wife and she helped me to pass the exam. She asked me to come up to her place a couple of times a week and then she used to give me extra lessons in maths and English, I think it was, and she really helped me to pass the exam to get to Camelford.

There was only about two, very rarely three only about one or two children went from each village because Camelford wasn’t very big, so you had Tintagel, Boscastle, Camelford, St. Teath, Delabole, Port Isaac all these places you see. St. Minver they went to Wadebridge. Trelights was the cut off mark. You only had one or two children allocated a place at Camelford, which was very unfair because some of the brighter ones just didn’t make it.
