The School Year

The School Year

The report for the July 1879 Board Day states the school had been open 420 times for the year ended Monday 30th June 1879. This must mean it was open for the equivalent of 210 days (there were some half day holidays – eg. Easter Monday) or 42 weeks during the year. Reports elsewhere suggest there was a month off in summer, so presumably there were six other weeks when the school was closed for a break. The headmaster’s weekly reports are all on a Friday and mention weeks starting on a Monday, so it does seem the school week was Monday to Friday, as now.
